Pictures on walls and why they matter to your family

As a mobile newborn and family photographer covering all of Dublin and the commuter belt, I see so many different homes. And nothing makes me happier than a wall covered in portraits. Research has shown that printed portraits on the wall enhance a child’s self-esteem. And it’s easy to see why- you are showing your child, in a very visible way, that they matter, that they are important and that they are so loved.

Nothing makes me happier than hearing from a previous client. Especially when they say the magic words “We need to finish the wall”. Look at the beautiful wall Lorraine has created in her home of her gorgeous family. After doing baby’s newborn session a year ago, we have just done their cake smash. It was so much fun and we have captured more happy memories forever. It makes me so happy to see my work on my client’s walls. Photographs are meant to be displayed not hidden on a cd or a USB.

I would love to see any more walls from previous clients if they would like to share their pictures in the comments. Feel free to contact me on or 087  7552092 to plan your very own session to fill your home with magical portraits of those you love the most.

Newborn Photography Safety

Often when I go to a home and am showing mum or dad how I achieve an image or a pose they say  “Oh I had no idea that’s how it was done- I thought you just balanced them like that!”. I am passionate about newborn safety. It is scary to realise that anybody with a camera can call themselves a newborn photographer- without any training at all in safe posing or even experience with babies. I pride myself in continuous training to make sure that I am always improving. I have trained with some of the best newborn photographers both here and abroad to make sure that I am attaining industry standards of safety.

I take safety very seriously. I’m sure all my past clients can attest that sometimes I am over-cautious but to me there is absolutely nothing more important than the safety and comfort of your precious baby. So for example, when you see an image like this:

Newborn baby head on hands pose.

You may be surprised to learn that it is a composite image. Baby is never left unsupported in this image. Mum’s hands are holding her little head at all times.

Being a newborn and baby photographer requires a unique set of skills (and patience) and there is a worldwide organisation that exists to support photographers who wish to have access to safety training and resources that we can use to provide clients with a better service. I’m delighted to be a member of BANPAS (Baby &Newborn Photography Association)  and you will be able to find me on their directory of photographers here . They also have a fabulous Facebook Page for pregnant and new parents here.  I have been a proud member of BANPAS since I first began my journey in newborn and baby photography.

If you are in Dublin or surrounding areas I’d be delighted to talk to you about how I can create a beautiful gallery of images for your newborn and very happy to chat to you about how I do that safely. Please contact me for booking and availability information on 087 7552092or at I look forward to hearing from you.

Please don’t worry about your session!

What an exciting blog title but this is such an important topic to me. I have had a few mummies say to me in the past few weeks as I arrived that they had genuinely considered cancelling their session that morning. Baby hadn’t slept/ they hadn’t slept/ baby was unsettled/ their todddler had gone crazy/ the house was crazy. Honestly I have heard every reason before. I am genuinely so impressed when I go to a house and somebody who is dressed (and just brought home a baby) answers the door. Go you! You have put clothes on. Bonus points if you have brushed your teeth. That is my level of expectation I have from my clients. Your life has just gone through a massive change and I think you are doing amazing just letting me through the door!

I had a baby with terrible silent reflux so don’t worry I am used to unsettled even cranky babies. I have a crazy toddler. I still haven’t lost the baby weight (he’s three!). So please, please trust me I understand. I do not judge. I have trained with amazing newborn photographers both here in Ireland and abroad to ensure that I have the highest standards in posing and safety. I adore being a newborn photographer. I love coming to your home in Dublin or further afield in Leinster to create beautiful professional portraits of your baby and your new family.

Here are some words from some of my wonderful, previous clients that may help to put you at ease.

Siobhain was an absolute pleasure to deal with, so calm & gentle with baby, and she made the whole process so easy and enjoyable for us. And all in the comfort of our own home. We were absolutely thrilled with the beautiful photos she took. We were so glad to have captured that very special time in our lives and we will treasure them always (Rosie).

Could not praise Siobhain enough, from her patience with our son when he wasn’t having any of it,to her attention to detail. So in love with all the pictures (Tanya).

You were so good with Caiden and made it a very relaxing experience (Edel).

Gorgeous sleeping baby

I could not recommend Siobhain enough, she took amazing photo’s of both my newborn son and 3 year old daughter and even convinced me to get in some which I am so happy I did, as she captured some amazing photo’s that I will treasure forever. I was not sure if my daughter would get in the photo’s as she can be quite shy but miraculously the opposite happened, we couldn’t keep her out of them, this was all down to Siobhain. She was also amazing with my newborn son and so patient. The best bit is that she comes to you which makes it all so relaxed (Denise).

If that’s not enough to convince you then let me finish with this. While I am minding your baby you will get to drink a HOT cup of tea with BOTH hands- and really what more could you ask for!

Áine’s Cake Smash and Splash

Cake smash and Splash Baby and Family Photographer Dublin-1

Last week the adorable Áine had a cake smash to celebrate her first birthday. This is a lovely, fun way to mark such a special occasion. I bring a colour co-ordinated cake, balloons and decorations for the event! It really makes for some very cute pictures of your little one.

A Newborn Photography Session with Me

Newborn Baby Photography in Action

From this to this…

Well this is my first blog ever so I’m going to keep it nice and simple. I thought I’d explain more about a newborn session with me. I cover all of Dublin but I do my sessions in the comfort of your home. I do travel so please enquire if you are that bit further away.

As newborn sessions are best done when baby is between 5-14 days old this means that you don’t have to try and organise yourself for an excursion. With the first baby making it out of the house with everything can take a bit of practice so I like to make it as easy as possible for my clients. I will bring absolutely everything that I need so you don’t have to worry about a thing. All I need is a room with a nice, big window. I have shot everywhere from apartments to country cottages and have always made enough room.

When I arrive we will have little chat. Mum can feed baby while I set up all my gear. When baby is fed Mum and Dad can go and have a cup of tea or a rest while I work with baby on my beanbag. Then I move on to parent shots. I always shoot parent shots in black and white. It is classically beautiful and very flattering. If there are sibling shots I will always include family portraits and all the siblings together with their new little brother or sister. Finally I do my prop shots. I have a variety of props available that you can choose from.

I allow up to 4 hours for a session to make sure that baby has plenty of time to feed and snuggle. My aim for your session is to create an environment for baby to be totally comfortable in and to capture those tiny details- those chubby cheeks, those side rolls and little tufts of hair. I want preserve the wonderful connection between baby and parents- this overwhelming new love that has just blossomed. I want to give you an experience that is a million miles away from a rushed chain studio. I want you to enjoy your session as much as the beautiful images that will come from it.
